How to draw a cover for a classic Frank Miller Daredevil comic without freaking out too much.
PLUS, Cutting-room-floor sketchzine preview!
My people,
I publish a bimonthly sketchzine. I started it because I wanted an outlet for all the stuff I draw that doesn’t have a specific home, a specific project attached.
This month a new issue drops, but this one is a little different. It’s a companion to the Life Studied 2 artbook I just Kickstarted. This zine is all the art that didn’t quite fit into the artbook.
Check it out.
As always, I ship these out to VIP Patrons signed, numbered and in this case sketched-in. Hit the link to see a FREE preview of the entire issue!
Additionally, VIPs get this month’s Sticker Club stickers too!
The folks at Marvel and Whatnot are reissuing the classic Daredevil 183 from the legendary Frank Miller run, to which I of course said YES!
It was an absolute honor!
I’ll walk you through the process a bit.
I tried to use the classic Punisher-shooting-DD-in-the-guts idea from the original comic, but it turns out these are not the 80’s and you can’t pull that off on a comic cover anymore!
So I reworked it and submitted these two ideas.
The bosses went with #3, and we were off to the races.
With the pencils I tried to give it an old-school look to fit in with the original comic.
In keeping with that old-school approach, I inked the cover with classic croquil pen and brush.
Then I proceeded to color. Though this part was done digitally I didn’t get flashy with it, sticking with a simple red/green palette.
We had to keep the space above DD and Big Pun because the folks at Whatnot had a plan to print some cool foil cover versions!
They also made these cool B&W and sans-title versions.
Marvel and Whatnot are dropping these April 25th. Click here for info on the drop.
Quick reminder, I’ll be at the Four State Comic Con this weekend!
Lastly, my kid’s new Substack just dropped. Give it a read, you won’t regret it!
That's it, everyone.
Take care of yourselves.
Your boy,
Mike
I’d’ve gone with No. 4! But you aced the assignment dude.
Mike do you have any online classes where you teach? Or books you recommend to get started following your process in drawing and creating? You had me following since Deadpool and eager to give it a try
